Macroeconomic Earthquakes †

چکیده

In the common jargon used by non-specialist commentators in newspapers or TV programs, business cycle downturns are sometimes described in terms of economic collapses, crashes or even earthquakes. Does these comparisons make any sense but for literary license? In particular, are economic recessions and recoveries governed at large by the same statistical law underlying earthquakes' occurrence? Providing an answer to this question may be of great interest to macroeconomists, given that certain empirical stylized facts associated with Pareto-Levy distributions, if found to hold true, might help in discriminating among alternative theories of the business cycle. In this paper, we look at the empirical distribution associated with the duration of business cycle recessions and recoveries for a set of crosscountry samples, over different time periods. We find that: i) recessions and recoveries are characterized by different invariant distributions, implying that they are likely to be governed by different dynamic laws; ii) power scaling regressions provide a reasonable fit in statistically modeling the distribution of recessions.

Prototype for Macroeconomic Decision Support System with Spatial Databases Support

Network organized structures can be stored and subsequently represented using spatial databases. They are used in areas where the aspects connected to maps and photos are very important: weather, management of natural calamities (earthquakes, fires, cyclones, volcanoes, floods), transportation and macroeconomic fluctuations. Studying side by side several such networks may reveal new aspects tha...

Earthquake Loss Estimation for India Based on Macroeconomic Indicators

Preliminary results from the 2001 India census indicate that the population is now 1,027,015,247 [1], making India the second most populous country in the world [2]. The United Nations projects that by the year 2050, India will be the most populated country in the world with over 1.5 billion people [2]. India has also experienced some of the most devastating earthquakes ever recorded. Examples ...

Do Earthquakes Shake Stock Markets?

This paper examines how major earthquakes affected the returns and volatility of aggregate stock market indices in thirty-five financial markets over the last twenty years. Results show that global financial markets are resilient to shocks caused by earthquakes even if these are domestic. Our analysis reveals that, in a few instances, some macroeconomic variables and earthquake characteristics ...

Macroeconomic Paradigms for Less Developed Countries

"If there are two or more ways to do something, and one of those ways can result in a catastrophe, then someone will do it." The economic history of the world is replete with recessions and depressions. From the bursting of the British South Sea Bubble and the French Mississippi Bubble in 1720 (which at least one economic historian claims delayed the industrial revolution by 50 years) to the in...

Observational constraints on the fracture energy of subduction zone earthquakes

[1] We relate seismologically observable parameters such as radiated energy, seismic moment, rupture area, and rupture speed to the dynamics of faulting. To achieve this objective, we computed the radiated energy for 23 subduction zone earthquakes recorded between 1992 and 2001; most of these earthquakes have a magnitude Mw > 7.5, but we also included some smaller (Mw 6.7) well-studied subducti...
